The XJ was another option, but fitting Jaguar's first new engine in 23 years to a relatively high-volume saloon car was considered too risky.

ENGINE. The big V12 engine is less desirable than 3.8- or 4.2-litre variants due to extra weight upsetting the E-type's handling, but also because it has a prodigious thirst. All told though, the 5.3-litre engine is a great piece of engineering that is capable of lasting much longer than its smaller relations.

Using lessons learned from the XJ13 engine, Jaguar developed the Series III E-Type's V-12 to maintain their customary level of power in the face of ever-stiffer emissions regulations.

In competition, the V12 had a remarkable career, from the domination of the Group 44 E-type in America, through the ill-fated Broadspeed Coupe, XJS in European Touring Cars, and a return to Le Mans with a 7.0-litre capacity, and two more wins in 1988 and 1990, taking Jaguar's tally to seven outright victories.
